Remembering Carla

Listed below is a collection of articles remembering Lees-McRae senior Carla Swart, who was tragically killed on  January 19, 2011 while training in her native South Africa. Carla will be remembered as a fierce competitor, a loyal friend, and a model student-athlete.

During her career at Lees-McRae, Carla won a total of 19 individual and team national championships. She leaves behind a tremendous legacy as the most decorated rider in the history of collegiate cycling, as well as the only cyclist ever to capture at least one national title in each of the four cycling disciplines in the same season.

Team HTC-Highroad, which Carla recently joined on a professional contract, has established the Carla’s Circle Foundation in her memory. Carla’s Circle was created to help Carla’s family and to help them continue Carla’s interests. Direct deposits can be made on the Carla’s Circle page, with all proceeds going to the Swart family.

Lees-McRae has also established the Carla Swart Memorial Scholarship in Carla’s honor, which will be awarded annually to a female cyclist who demonstrates a love for the sport and exhibits great promise as a cyclist. Checks should be made out to Lees-McRae College (note Carla Swart Scholarship in the memo line) and mailed to the Office of Advancement, P.O. Box 128, Banner Elk, NC 28604. With questions about the scholarship, please contact Caroline Hart, vice president for advancement, at (828) 898-8777.
