Gene Renfro is in his second year as the Director of Compliance at Lees-McRae College.
Renfro brings a tremendous amount of experience in collegiate athletics to Lees-McRae, having served as the first full-time sports information director at fellow Conference Carolinas member King College from 2009 to 2011.
During his tenure at the Bristol, Tenn. school, Renfro served as the primary media contact for King’s 22 intercollegiate athletic programs, playing an integral role in the College’s transition from the NAIA ranks to the NCAA Division II level, while publicizing King’s first two NCAA II national championship teams. Renfro was also an adjunct professor at King teaching Sport Management, Sport Publicity and Sport Writing courses.
Prior to his arrival at King, Renfro served as the assistant sports information director at Union College (Ky.) for over two years. While at Union, Renfro functioned as the primary contact for 14 of the Bulldogs’ intercollegiate athletic programs, as well as the secondary contact for the football, women’s basketball, bowling, and baseball teams. He also taught as an adjunct professor at the Kentucky school in 2009.
Renfro’s career in college athletics began at Milligan in the fall of 2001, where he spent his undergraduate years as a student assistant and intern in the sports information office, as well as a student assistant coach with the baseball program. After graduation, Renfro returned to Milligan as the College’s sports information director and director of men’s basketball operations during the 2005-2006 season.
A native of Johnson City, Tenn., Renfro has recently served as a sports writer with the Johnson City Press, Elizabethton Star and tricitiessports.com, as well as working on the game day staff at East Tennessee State University as an instant replay official during home basketball games. In addition he has worked with the Johnson City Cardinals and Elizabethton Twins of the Appalachian League as well as numerous other athletic tournaments and events.
Renfro holds a Master of Art degree in physical education from East Tennessee State, and a Bachelor of Science in communications from Milligan. The Carter County product was nominated for inclusion in the inaugural class of the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame for his service to the County and surrounding area.
He has also served Lees-McRae as an adjunct faculty member teaching Golf and Sports in the Cinema courses.
