The month of February has proved to be a strong opening to the Lees-McRae men's and women's tennis teams. With a combination of strong team performances and individual winning streaks by Shaun Sumner and Kasey Mabe, the Bobcats head into this weekend with high expectations.
As the top singles player on the men's team, Sumner has started the season with a 4-0 record, starting off with a win over Milan Kosicky of the nationally ranked Virginia Intermont College team. Sumner took the first set 6-3 and won the match when Kosicky was forced to retire with an injury in the second set. Although the team lost to the Cobras, Sumner's winning high carried over to the team's next match against Milligan College where Sumner dominated Ryan Reynolds 6-1, 7-5 and helped push the Bobcats to their first team victory of the season. Sumner won both matches last week, 7-5, 7-6 over Mt. Olive's Guilherme Serra and 6-4, 6-2 over Barton's Brent Ching.
On the women's side, Mabe has put together a strong start in the number two singles spot and with doubles partner Jessica Cline. Mabe opened the year with a loss to Lauren Holton of Division I Appalachian State 3-6, 4-6. Mabe regrouped with wins against Monica Barone, 6-1 and 6-0 of Mt. Olive as well as a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Allison Cobb of Barton. Team with Cline, the pair won both of their matches at Mt. Olive and Barton 9-7 and 8-5 respectively. Returning home to face the Virginia Intermont women's team, the ladies avenged the loss on the men's side with an 8-2 win. Mabe took on Trion Reilly in singles play, winning 6-2, 6-1 and also improved her doubles record with Cline to 3-0, defeating Kat Rewilak and Kelsey Duncan 8-0.
