Lees-McRae Cycling Team Races in Bristol
Bristol, TN--Looking to improve upon last season's second place finish at the Collegiate Cyclo Cross Nationals, the Lees-McRae College Bobcats Cycling Team traveled to Bristol, TN for the TBRA Mud, Sweat, and Gears event in preparations for this year's National Championships. The event also allowed Head Coach Doug Owen an opportunity to see his team in action before finalizing the roster for the upcoming National race in Rhode Island.
Racing against some of the top cyclo cross racers from North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, the Bobcats showed their competition that they are just as strong in cyclo cross as they are on the track and on the mountain. Last weekend's performance appears to have the Bobcats poised for a run at the Cyclo Cross National Title.
In the Men's Pro race, Danny Marquardt battle back and forth for
the lead from start to finish. Marquardt finished the race in
second while teammate Chris Consorto was a close third, attaining
the position early and holding on for the remainder of the race.
Wes Shirey and Aaron, competing in their first cyclo cross race
ever, finished in fifth and sixth respectively while Gonzalo
Escobar claimed eight, giving the Bobcats five of the top eight
In the Women's Pro race, Carla Stewart and Kacey Mandefield battled head to head from the moment the start gun went off. Stewart pulled away late to win in a sprint. All Stacher took home third place giving the Lady Bobcats a sweep of the Podium.
In the CX3 race Paul Davis and Chris Pickerel rode near the front the entire race but could not gain on the leader finished second and third respectively. Brett Collins participated in his first cyclo cross event riding well and finishing in 12th place. Coach Owen also got in on the action, riding in the Master's 45 and over division and taking sixth place.
The team will race twice more in preparation for Nationals, held December 14th Rhode Island. The Bobcats cycling teams will be in Hendersonville, NC on November 18th and make a return trip to Bristol December 2nd.
