GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Lees-McRae College cycling team had another very successful weekend of racing at the Hincapie Racing Series.
Peter Haile had two amazing performances in the category 3 races. On Saturday Haile won the sprint out of a small breakaway group which included his trusty teammate Nate Larson who finished third. In Sunday's race Haile showed his strength again by attacking the field before the finish winning the race with a nice gap in front of the peloton.
In the Women's Pro 1/2 race Ally Stacher won Saturday's race by soloing away from her breakaway companions. On Sunday Jo Markham narrowly missed the victory when she was caught in the closing meters to the finish. Stacher placed second and Jo third respectfully. Cinthia Lehner, who will be coming to Lees-McRae next year to race for the Bobcats, won the women's race.
In the Men's Pro 1/2 race on Saturday Scott Jackson made the winning breakaway and managed a hard earned third place against some of the best men's cyclists in the Southeast. Joseph Welsh was sprinting like a hero for the field sprint when a crash took him down. Welsh bounced up with minor cuts and bruises but would be ready to race on Sunday.
Sunday's Pro 1/2 men's race, in extremely windy conditions, became a race of attrition. Only about 20 riders out of 90 who started finished this brutal race. With nine guys up the road in a break on Sunday, John Doyle managed to finish a strong 11th place in a decimated field.
A big thanks to Kathryn Smith's parents for treating the team to a nice, home-cooked meal Saturday night! Thank you to the Smith and Welsh families for coming and supporting the team this past weekend!
