TREXLERTOWN, PENN. - The Lees-McRae College cycling team departed for the Track Nationals with little experienced but finished fifth overall to start off their season.
The only track experience the team has had during the season was a few rides on a local track in Asheville, N.C.
The riders started racing at the preferred cycling center, known as the top track racing venue in the country, on Tuesday with three and four kilometer pursuits, followed by an evening session of 500 meter and 1 km time trials. One rider, Jennifer Greenberg, got 3rd place in the 3km pursuit while the rest of the team finished solid on the other events.
Friday, four riders competed in the women's team pursuit where Kristen "Jo" Markham, Erica Zeveta, Jennifer Greenberg, and Adormarie Martinez Adorno finished second in the team pursuit.
The riders also competed in the CO-ED team sprint where Chloe Jackson, Greenberg, Wentworth Knipe, Nathan Larson, Christopher Dale, and Zach Felpel road to a fourth place time beating the second place time in the finals. Also, some of the riders competed in match sprints, points races, and other events to finish out the day.
Saturday was the last day of the week. With rain threatening all day, the races went quickly and the men's team pursuit team went early on and finished fifth overall.
As the day went on, the point race final and women's match sprints created tension as Lees-McRae waited to hear the team score. In the end, they finished 5th over all and added made a great start to the year
