BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Members of the Lees-McRae College and Banner Elk communities are invited to join in a memorial service to celebrate the life of Carla Swart at the Banner Elk Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. The service will be a time to remember a remarkable young talent, as well as honor her family and friends.
Saturday's service will begin at the Presbyterian Church and conclude at the Historic Mill Pond. Local pastors will assist in the ceremony, and the Lees-McRae community is invited to attend. The service will be a time to remember a remarkable young talent, as well as honor her family and friends.
Originally recruited to run cross country, Swart was a 19-time national cycling champion while at Lees-McRae, making a name for herself among the world cycling community. She was regarded as the brightest young talent in South African cycling.
Late in her storied Bobcat career, Swart joined the top women's cycling team in the world in October 2010, joining HTC-Highroads. Swart will be remembered as one of the top names in collegiate cycling, and will be remembered among the Lees-McRae community with the Carla Swart Memorial Scholarship.
The Carla Swart Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a female cyclist who demonstrates a love for the sport and exhibits great promise as a cyclist. Checks should be made out to Lees-McRae College (note Carla Swart Scholarship in the memo line) and mailed to the Office of Advancement, P.O. Box 128, Banner Elk, NC 28604.
