Bobcats maintain slim lead at Road Nationals

MADISON, Wis. --- The Lees-McRae College cycling team finished third in both the men's and women's team trial races on Saturday morning, maintaining a narrow six-point lead over Marian University heading into Sunday's final day of the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships.

Lees-McRae entered the day with a 19-point lead over Fort Lewis College, accumulating 177 points in Friday's road races , while Fort Lewis and Marian earned 158 and 129 markers, respectively. The Bobcats pushed their weekend total to 323 points on Saturday, finishing third in both team time trials while Marian claimed the title in each competition to cut LMC's lead to six points with a two-day total of 317 markers. Fort Lewis finished fifth in both time trials to drop into third place with 262 points.

The quartet of Rachel Warner (Luray, Va.), Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa.), Cinthia Lehner (Greer, S.C.), and Adormarie Martinez Adorno (Villa Carolina, Puerto Rico) started the day for the Bobcats with a solid showing in the women's time trial, finishing third with a time of 45:32.07 behind the teams from Marian and University of California - Davis.

Brian Sheedy (Rockford, Mich.), Sondre Thorbergsen (Tranoy, Norway), Peter Haile (Fort Collins, Colo.), and Bradford Perley (Kennebunkport, Maine) followed with a third-place performance in the men's race, finishing behind Marian and Appalachian State University with a time of 38:53.15.

Lees-McRae returns to the course on Sunday at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships, competing in the men's and women's criteriums in its quest for the program's 11th national championship.
