ANGEL FIRE, N.M. --- Bradford Perley (Kennebunkport, Maine) and Kerry Werner (Birdsboro, Pa.) each recorded a top-five performance in the men's cross country race, and Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa.) finished eighth in the women's cross country competition to pace the Lees-McRae College cycling team on the first day of the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals on Friday.
Lees-McRae sits third in the team omnium rankings after the first day with 132 points, as Fort Lewis College (188) and the University of Colorado at Boulder (156) occupy the top two spots. The University of Wyoming is fourth with 100 points, followed closely by California Polytechnic - San Luis Obispo (99).
Zaveta started the day with a strong run in the women's Division I cross country race, finishing eighth with a time of 2:02:07. Cinthia Lehner (Greer, S.C.) crossed the line next for the Bobcats in 27th, finishing with a mark of 2:32:31 as Megan Baab placed 31st with a time of 2:45:20.
Perley and Werner put together a pair of strong performances in the men's race, crossing the line within one second of each other in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Ezra Mullen (Nottingham, N.H.) and Trevor MacLean (Westport, Conn.) finished 13th and 15th, respectively, with times of 2:30:00 and 2:33:02, as Joseph Welsh (Cordova, Tenn.) placed 23rd with a mark of 2:44:45.
Lees-McRae returns to the trails on Saturday when the Bobcats take the course in the short track and downhill competitions on the second day of the Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals in Angel Fire, N.M.
