Werner tops podium, Bobcats third at Cyclocross Nationals

MADISON, Wis. --- The Lees-McRae College cycling team turned in an impassioned performance at the 2012 USA Cycling Collegiate Cyclocross Nationals this weekend, finishing one point behind team omnium champion Marian University and second-place Fort Lewis College to claim the third spot on the podium.

Marian and Fort Lewis finished tied atop the team omnium standings with 167 points each. The Bobcats, riding in memory of freshman teammate Megan Baab, who passed away in a tragic training accident on December 15, placed second in both the men's and women's races to claim the third spot on the podium with 166 markers. Lindsey Wilson College and the University of Wisconsin at Madison each finished tied with 113 points to place fourth and fifth, respectively.

The weekend kicked off with the women's races on Saturday, as the Bobcats placed three riders in the top 10 and five in the top 20 to head into Sunday's men's races second in the team omnium standings with 83 points.

Emily Shields (Salisbury, N.C.) turned in a third-place individual finish with a time of 46:01:00, while twin sister Katherine Shields (Salisbury, N.C.) and Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa.) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 47:16:00 and 47:29:00. Cinthia Lehner (Greer, S.C.) placed 16th with a time of 1:00:10, while Mackenzie Filippi (Cary, N.C.) finished 17th.

Kerry Werner (Birdsboro, Pa.) followed with the performance of the weekend for the Bobcats, winning the men's race with a time of 41:03:00 to grab the top spot on the podium. Bradford Perley (Kennebunkport, Maine) also finished ninth with a time of 44:20:00, rebounding from a bad crash and finishing the race injured in perhaps the gutsiest performance of the weekend. Nathan Larson (Erie, Pa.) and Davis Bentley (Mill Valley, Calif.) also finished 13th and 17th, respectively for the Bobcats.

Werner closed out the weekend as the men's individual omnium champion, while Emily and Katherine Shields each earned a spot on the women's podium.

Lees-McRae opens the 2012 road season on February 4 and 5 in Gainesville, Fla. at the University of Florida's road weekend.
