OGDEN, Utah --- Spencer Oswald (Dubuque, Iowa) joined a long list of national championship riders at Lees-McRae College this past weekend, winning the individual time trial to lead the Bobcat cycling team to a strong eighth-place finish at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships.
BRISTOL, Tenn. --- The Lees-McRae College cycling team dominated the field at the Cobra-Tornado Spring Classic this past weekend, winning six of the 11 races in which they were entered. Zac Felpel (Willow St., Pa.) and Katherine Shields (Salisbury, N.C.) both turned in strong performances for the Bobcats, each picking up an individual win to go along with an additional top five finish.
NICE, France --- Former Lees-McRae College cyclist Andrew Talansky closed out Paris-Nice in style on Sunday, finishing second overall and just 55 seconds behind general classification winner Richie Porte to earn the white jersey as the best young rider.
The WorldTour makes its first foray into Europe at Paris-Nice, with a 2.9km prologue time trial kicking off the eight-day race on Sunday, and Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp) is ready. Now entering his third year at the WorldTour level, all spent with the Garmin organisation, the 24-year-old American faces the first test of a season in which he expects to make his Tour de France debut in July.
A typically windswept day of racing at the Tour of Qatar ended with a surprise winner as Brent Bookwalter (BMC) claimed victory on stage 1 to Dukhan Beach. The American was part of a three-man group which forged clear in the finale, and then defied the odds and a block headwind to fend off the peloton.
MADISON, Wis. --- Kerry Werner (Birdsboro, Pa.) successfully defended his 2012 championship at USA Cycling Collegiate Cyclo-Cross Nationals this weekend, crossing the finish line ahead of the field to lead the Lees-McRae College cycling team to a strong third-place performance.
Angel Fire, N.M. --- Kerry Werner (Birdsboro, Pa.) finished third in the individual omnium to lead the Lees-McRae College cycling team to a strong fourth-place performance at the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships this past weekend.
