BRISTOL, Va. --- The Lees-McRae cycling program completed another successful weekend when it participated in a SECCC mountain bike showdown over the weekend in Bristol, Va.

The showdown was hosted by King University at Sugar Hollow Park.  The team continued their early season success by racking up another seven victories and 20 podiums, which brings their season totals to 22 and 58, respectively.

This was the team's first race in three weeks due to a break in the conference mountain bike calendar.  The rainy weather affected the two morning events on Saturday, but the remainder of the weekend lacked precipitation.  Saturday was a full day that began with an individual time trial followed by a short track, both in the rain, but the afternoon dual slalom session was unaffected by the weather.  Sunday was the cross country race, which saw some sunshine with stronger winds.

The Bobcats biggest success came on Saturday afternoon in the dual slalom event where they took home four victories.  On the women side, Hailey Sarausky (Littleton, N.H.) won in Women A, and Samantha Croft (Auckland, New Zealand) in Women B.  Evan Christensen (El Cajon, Calif.) won Men B and Jack Perry (Brewster, Mass.) won in Men C.  Defending National Champion Phil Kmetz (Keene, N.H.) brought home fourth and Matthew Clements (New Market, Md.) was fifth in Men A.

Sarausky's determination on gravity events continues to pay off.  "This was the first time I raced an old school slalom track. Handling skills and being dynamic on the bike is something that the team has really been working on. Having confidence in my skills ultimately determined my success," said Sarausky about her slalom victory.

"We were a bit concerned about the long layoff between races.  We trained hard and stayed as sharp as possible by racing some cyclocross in Boone.  The only area we struggled was in the short track with just one podium, but once the weather improved they kicked it up a notch," said Coach Tim Hall.

Freshman Cole Kraft (Wendell, N.C.) had a big weekend in Men C by earning two victories and a second place.  Cole kicked off the event by winning the time trial by 1:34, and followed it up with a second place in the dual slalom, losing to teammate Perry.  Cole bounced back on Sunday to handily take the victory in the cross country race.

"This being my first year of racing I came in not knowing much about how the races would work.  It's been an incredible opportunity to work with a team that is so supportive and willing to help others get better, and to teach the newer racers the ropes," said Kraft.

Assistant Coach PJ Noto was impressed by adding, "We are using more team tactics in the endurance events. With some fine tuning this will prove to be a difference maker for us.  We fought hard all weekend despite bad weather and made the best of it. I am proud of the team's efforts and am confident we will only get sharper in the coming weeks."

The team travels to Lindsey Wilson College next weekend before wrapping up the regular season in two weeks at Clemson University for the SECCC Conference Championship.  The USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championship will follow on October 23-25 in Snowshoe, W. Va.
