LMC Cycling Announces Roster for Collegiate National Road Championship

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Bobcats begin their final races of the 2015-2016 season at the collegiate national road championship in Marshall, N.C. on Friday, May 13th. The three day event hosts teams from across the U.S. who are competing in a road race, criterium, and team time trial. Lees-McRae is entering five women and six men in the event, and aspire to compete for a team podium placing in the end.

Friday kicks off the event with a road race in Marshall, N.C.  The men will compete for 72 miles on Friday morning while the women race 48 miles that afternoon. On Saturday, the Bobcats will race a criterium in downtown Burnsville.  The women compete at 12:30 p.m. for 50 minutes plus three laps, while the men start at 3:15 p.m. for 70 minutes plus three laps. The team time trial wraps up the championship on Sunday back in Marshall. The 30 kilometer event takes place on Highway 70 along the French Broad River.

“We encourage locals in the High Country to come and watch the event. Marshall is less than two hours away while Burnsville is only an hour from campus,” said director and head coach of cycling Tim Hall.

The Bobcats are coming off a successful conference championship at Clemson two weeks ago, which is fueling their motivation.

“We are going into this championship with high aspirations. Our women will be rallying around Ashlyn (Woods) to put her in position to win while several of the men have the potential to pull out victories. Alec (Hoover), Evan (Christenson) and Michael (Zanetti) are all three strong enough to win or earn a medal,” said Hall. “The racing is going to be the hardest and fastest anyone has done all season, but all eleven riders are physically and mentally ready.”

In 2015 the Bobcats finished sixth overall at road nationals in the Division I team omnium.  Going into the event the team is ranked eighth overall in the Division I annual rankings, which includes all collegiate disciplines of racing.

“Our goal is to get back on the overall team podium this weekend. Last year we missed out, but this year we are stronger and have more depth. I believe it will all come down to the team time trial on Sunday,” said Hall.
