Kmetz Earns Pair of Wins; LMC Cycling Shines at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. --- Junior Phil Kmetz earned wins in the Dual Slalom Men A and Downhill Men A while the Lees-McRae cycling program completed a successful weekend at Clemson University in Clemson, S.C.

Overall, LMC claimed five victories, nine top-three finishes and 23 top 10's. Kmetz (Keene, N.H.) led the way with two victories while Silas Moorefield (Statesville, N.C.), Veronica Laughton (Lancaster, Calif.) and Jake Grimes (Matthews, N.C.) earned one each.

"Our gravity team really shined bright this weekend.  Our captain Phil Kmetz had great runs in the downhill, and then had phenomenal battles in the final heats in the dual slalom.  Jake Kahn also did quite well in a stacked field. Simona Croccolo (Castleton, Vt.) and Veronica Laughton are an excellent one-two combo, which is something we have not had in a few years. We felt like we would perform well, but to win three out of four gravity events is pretty special," said head coach and director of cycling Tim Hall.

"Michael Zanetti (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and captain Emma Klingaman (Ildyllwild, Calif.0, two key seniors, led our endurance squad each day with strong consistent finishes. The depth of strength in the SECCC has improved with the addition of Piedmont and Savanna College of Art and Design (SCAD), so podium placings and top 10s are much more difficult now. The weekly level of competition within the conference will make everyone better ahead of nationals."

"Our younger riders really stepped up and made a good impression. It was exciting to see freshman Quinn Reeves (Tyler, Texas) crack the top 10 in cross country, and sophomore Jack Perry (Brewster, Mass.) come from behind for a top 10 in the short track. Laughton did an outstanding job all weekend considering she raced all four events. Very few athletes can win in gravity and then achieve top 10 results in endurance, and she's just a freshman."

"Jake Grimes and Silas Moorefield were exciting to watch in Men B. It was fun to see those two battling it out with one another for victory.  Jake and Silas show great promise for us in the future for Men A."

The Bobcats travel to Barbourville, Ky. to ride at Union College Sep. 10-11.
