BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College cycling team announced the signing of Matthew Armstrong (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) for the upcoming 2017-18 season Wednesday. Armstrong joins fellow signees Andrew Sparks and Svetlana Mack as Bobcats who will join the program next season.
"Matthew is one of several from overseas we have signed for 2017," LMC Head Coach Tim Hall said. "Banner Elk and the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains are very appealing to international cyclists, especially with our technical trails and long climbs. We strive to have a diverse roster of riders from different cultures, which we believe provides for a more enriching experience for everyone on the team. I look forward to see the impact Matthew has on our team and campus."
Matthew said he chose to study at Lees-McRae because of the strong cycling team but also the setting of the campus in the mountains which is where he plans to spend a lot of my time with his bike. The fact that he will be able to ski in the winter was also a nice bonus for him.
"We are excited Matthew has chosen to attend Lees-McRae and hone his cycling ability here in Banner Elk," said Hall. "He is a proven time-trialist and solid all-around cyclist. With his strength, I believe he can become an outstanding off-road racer as well."
Armstrong intends on majoring in business administration when he enrolls at Lees-McRae this fall.
