BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College cycling team announced the signing of Jacob Tarbay (Altamont, N.Y.) to join the Bobcats for the 2017-18 season. Tarbay is the fifth signee for the Bobcats joining Dagny Palmer, Matthew Armstrong, Andrew Sparks and Svetlana Mack as new cyclists for next season.
"Jacob is a high energy competitor with the unique ability to compete in three different disciplines," said LMC Head Coach Tim Hall of Tarbay. "We're excited to have him because he has a lot of room to grow on the dirt and pavement. Jacob is another NICA mountain bike league graduate, and will be our first one from their league in New York. Initially he will make the biggest impact on the mountain bike, but I believe in time he will shine in cyclocross and road as well."
Tarbay, who volunteers at the American Legion and Saint Andrews in his spare time, comes to Banner Elk with several accolades to his name. Tarbay was the state champion in New York in mountain in both 2015 and 2016 along with winning a state title in cyclocross in 2016 as well. Tarbay also wrestled for Guilderland High School where he made two state tournament appearances.
"I chose to attend Lees-McRae because the area around the college is absolutely beautiful and reminds me a bit of home," said Tarbay. "The atmosphere and size of the college is exactly what I was looking for. One of the biggest draws was the reputation that the school has for its academic programs and sports teams. I will be racing mountain bike, cyclocross and road as part of the cycling team."
Tarbay intends to major in wildlife biology when he enrolls at Lees-McRae this fall.
