BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College cycling team announced the signing of Bergen Khare (Brevard, N.C.) to join the Bobcats for the 2017-18 season. Khare is the seventh signee for the Bobcats this spring. Khare joins Austin Brown, Jacob Tarbay, Dagny Palmer, Matthew Armstrong, Andrew Sparks and Svetlana Mack as new cyclists for LMC this fall.
"We are thrilled Bergen has chosen to join our team here at Lees-McRae," said LMC Head Coach Tim Hall. "He has proven to be one of the top gravity riders in the region, and shows a lot of promise for the future. We believe he will continue to improve his skills and strength by being around riders like Phil Kmetz and Veronica Laughton, while also working regularly with Coach Noto."
Khare has won several titles already as a cyclist including at the 2016 Snowshoe Race Series and at the 2016 Bailey Mountain Rolling Thunder Series. Khare, who also played soccer for Brevard High School, notched a third place finish at the 2016 Snowshoe Pro GRT.
"I choose Lees McRae College because of the location and trail heads close to the college campus that would give me the chance to push myself further in my cycling career," said Khare. "Lees-McRae also offers academic programs that will benefit me more in my future."
Khare intends on enrolling in the business administration at LMC when he comes to Banner Elk this fall.
"I believe Bergen has the ability to compete right away with the best in the country in collegiate," added Hall. "We are hoping he will be one of several new signees to help deliver us back to the podium as a team next fall in Montana at mountain bike nationals."
