BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College cycling team travels to Louisville, Ky. this week to compete in collegiate cyclocross nationals, from Thursday (Dec. 13) to Saturday (Dec. 15).
Starting Roster - Five men and four women will be racing for Lees-McRae at collegiate cyclocross nationals:
Andrew Blackstone (So., North Monmouth, Maine)
Liam Flanagan (Fr., Black Mountain, N.C.)
David Kahn (Fr., Putnam Valley, N.Y.)
Zachary Ross (So., Cincinnati, Ohio)
Andrew Sparks (Sr., Cape Town, South Africa)
Kiley Krasley (Fr., Coplay, Pa.)
Dagny Palmer (So., Phoenixville, Pa.)
Erin Sferrazza (Jr., North Easton, Mass.)
Ashlyn Woods (Sr., Winston-Salem, N.C.)
"Ashlyn and Andrew have been consistently on or near the podium, while Liam, David, Kiley, and Erin have all been battling for top-10 finishes as well," said head cycling coach Tim Hall.
On the starting roster for Lees-McRae are several riders who competed in cyclocross nationals a year ago, as well as several freshmen who are competing in their first nationals competition.
"Our cyclocross team has performed well throughout the season, so we are looking forward to see what we can accomplish in Louisville," said Hall. "We have several key returners from last year's team that went to Reno, as well as a few freshmen we believe should do well."
Hall explained that a top-10 or podium finishes at nationals is much more difficult than just at any ordinary conference race, but that the team has the goal in mind of earning those finishes to prove themselves.
"Finishing on the podium or placing top 10 at nationals is a much bigger challenge than in conference racing, but our riders are definitely capable," said Hall. "If we can leave Louisville with a medal or two we will consider it a great success."
The women will take the course on Thursday (Dec. 13) at 2:25 p.m. with the men racing at 4:35 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 14). The 4x4 team relay will take place at Saturday (Dec. 15) at 4:15 p.m.
