BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College cycling team announced the signing of Maria Döring on Tuesday afternoon. Döring joins a group of seven other female cyclists that have signed with the Bobcats for the upcoming 2019-20 campaign.
Döring comes to Banner Elk from across the pond in Germany. Döring, who intends to compete in mountain bike, cyclocross and road for the Bobcats, is an accomplished cyclist and athlete as she was a state champion in mountain bike and was named her high school's athlete of the year in 2018. In addition to her athletic exploits, Döring also organized mountain bike training for kids in her local community.
"We are thrilled to have Maria join our women team all the way from Germany," said LMC Head Coach Tim Hall. "She brings a lot of experience, determination, and skill to the table, and we believe will be a difference maker for us in all three disciplines. Maria has the potential to be a solid performer right away, and will definitely add more depth to our elite women A squad."
Döring looks forward to joining the Bobcats this coming season for multiple reasons.
"I chose Lees-McRae College because it's a very small and beautiful college in the mountains that has the perfect conditions for studying and cycling," said Döring. "Lees-McRae cycling is also one of the most successful programs in the United States and I am looking forward to being a part of it."
Döring stated that Kate Courtney is her favorite cyclist due to her down to earth nature and her willingness to take time for her fans.
Döring, who is the daughter of Petra and Hartmut Döring, is a proposed health and wellness science major at Lees-McRae to go along with a minor in cycling studies.
