Cycling signs first recruit for 2020

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College cycling program announced the signing of student-athlete Ava Sykes (Clover, S.C.) on Thursday afternoon. Sykes is the first signee for the 2020 season for the Bobcats.

"Ava has proven herself to be one of the best junior road racers in the country," said LMC Head Coach Tim Hall. "She has a lot of elite level racing experience, nationally and internationally, and will make a difference right away on our A team.  We anticipate her greatly boosting our mountain and cyclocross teams as well.  Ava has the ability and hunger to reach the highest level in the sport, so we are thrilled she has chosen to become a Bobcat."

Sykes, who will compete in road, mountain and cyclocross at LMC, is a multiple time national road medalist. She is also a 20-time state champion between road and cyclocross. Her favorite pro cyclist is Katarzyna Niewiadoma because of her amazing passion and grit for cycling.

"Lees-McRae chose me," said Sykes. "Upon my first visit, I instantly fell in love. The location in the beautiful mountains and the small class sizes drew me in."

Sykes is a proposed business major at Lees-McRae.
