BANNER ELK, NC--The Lees-McRae College Bobcats basketball team hosted Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference opponent Mount Olive Trojans Saturday afternoon but fell short to an athletic Mount Olive team 90-80.
The Bobcats started the game on a 10-0 run but would not be able to maintain the lead for long. Mount Olive would make a couple of substitutions that would give the Trojans the spark they needed. Mount Olive's bench out scored the Bobcats 20-9 in the first half to help give the Trojans a 36-33 lead at half time.
Both teams would come out shooting in the second half as nether team missed their first couple of shots. Lansen Leach (High Point, NC) would answer a Trojan three pointer with 16:20 remaining in the game to bring the Bobcats within three. Both teams would exchange buckets when shooting guard Henry Williams (Kingsport, TN) would steal the ball and find Leach open for an easy lay-up. The Bobcats finally tied the game 64-64 as freshman James Barbee (Durham, NC) drove the lane for the easy deuce. Mount Olive would keep the offensive pressure on the Bobcats, as they would end the game draining their free throws.
Leach would end the game with a game high 28 points and 6 rebounds, while Williams finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds.
The Bobcats finish the season 6-21 overall and 4-16 in conference and will now focus their attention on the CVAC tournament this week. The Bobcats will travel to Laurinburg, NC to battle the St. Andrews College Knights in first round action on Monday February 27. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30pm.
