CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College men's basketball team couldn't finish the comeback in their Conference Carolinas season opener Tuesday night as they fell to the Queens University of Charlotte Royals 78-70.
Queens (1-3, 1-0) held a 15-point lead, 20-5, just under the midway mark in the first half. As it looked like the game might get away from the visiting Bobcats (0-6, 0-1), three-pointers from Aaron Woodacre (Piney Flats, Tenn.) and Reshon Benjamin (Valdosta, Ga.) put the teams within six points of each other.
Patrick Fox hit a buzzer-beating three to give the Royals a 32-28 advantage heading to the locker room.
Although Queens quickly opened the lead up to nine after the intermission, the Bobcats were able cut the lead down and tie the game with 10:48 to play.
Fox retook the lead for Queens with one of his five threes in the game. On the next possession he added three more with a shot from behind the arc. From there, Fox and Reggie Hopkins would score 12 of the next 17 Queens' points.
Woodacre sank a three to put Lees-McRae just four behind with 44 seconds to go, but clutch free throws from J.B. Baldwin, Charles Burgess and Fox kept the Royals on top for the remainder of the contest.
Nick DeSchepper (Fishers, Ind.) led Lees-McRae with 20 points. Kyle Boardman (Clemmons, N.C.) followed with 11 and eight rebounds.
Fox led the Royals with 23 points, and Hopkins added 20. Around the glass Kevin Fowler pulled down nine boards and also put up nine points.
The Bobcats return to action Tuesday, December 2nd on the road at Newberry at 7 p.m.
