BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Bobcats men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker to the Anderson University Trojans, 60-56, Monday night in Williams Gymnasium.
Kyle Boardman (Clemmons, N.C.) led the way for the Bobcats with
15 points on 7-15 from the floor and 1-2 from the behind the arc.
Aaron Woodacre (Piney Flats, Tenn.) knocked down 12 points, and Sam
Youse (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored 11 and collected nine rebounds.
Woodacre scored all 12 of his points in the first half and was held
to one shot in the second half for the Bobcats.
Nick Trull and Kevis Cornwell scored 14 points for the Trojans. Trull was 4 of 9 behind the three point line and Cornwell was a staggering 6 of 9 from the field. Brandon Young had 13 points, and Trey Britton had ten points and nine rebounds.
In the first half the Bobcats jumped out to a 14-7 lead with 13 minutes to play after two Sam Youse free throws, but Steven Cobb drilled a three on the next possession for the Trojans to close the gap to four and keep the lead close.
With 8:15 left in the half Trull hit a three to bring Anderson within one, 21-20, and with 7:14 left Trull knocked down another three to give the Trojans a two point lead, 23-21.
With 2:36 left in the half, Woodacre converted a four-point play to give the Bobcats the lead, 30-29. They carried a five point lead, 36-31, into the locker rooms when Woodacre knocked down two more threes, the last coming with four seconds left in the half.
The Bobcats shot 12-32, 37 percent, from the floor and 5-12, 41 percent, from behind the arc in the first half, but Anderson outshot Lees-McRae going 12-29, 41 percent, from the floor and 4-9, 44 percent, from behind the arc.
Opening the second half the Bobcats increased the lead when Youse picked off a pass and took it in for a jam. On the Trojan possession, Hoots picked off a pass and fed Sean Hardin (Camden, Del.) to complete the alley-oop to give the Bobcats a 10 point lead, 43-33, with 15:15 remaining in the game.
After a Trojan timeout, Anderson when on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 45 on another Trull trey with 8:20 left on the clock.
Anderson would take the lead for the final time at the seven minute mark when Trull sank his sank his fourth and final three to give the Trojans a 48-47 lead.
Young made the final ten points for the Trojans, who improve to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference, to seal the win and give the Bobcats an 0-14 overall record and 0-4 in conference action.
In the second half, the Bobcats shot 9-22, 40 percent, in field goals and 0-5 from three, while the Trojans went 9-26, 34 percent, from the field and 3-12, 25 percent, from three. In the second half Lees-McRae went 2 of 6 from the free throw line, while Anderson went 8 of 11 down the stretch.
Lees-McRae will travel to Limestone College on Thursday, January 8th for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against the Saints.
