Bulldogs best Bobcats, 100-62
WILSON, N.C. --- The Barton College men's basketball team outscored Lees-McRae College by a 55-18 margin in the first half and held off a late Bobcat rally en route to a 100-62 victory in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday evening.
Barton (17-5, 12-4 CC) shot an even 50 percent from the floor in the contest, converting 23-of-26 attempts at the free throw line and going 11-for-20 from beyond the three-point arc. The Bulldogs held Lees-McRae (2-20, 2-14 CC) to a field goal percentage of 38.8 percent on the night, including a 27.3 percent clip in the first half, while winning the battle on the glass by a 38-27 margin.
Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, Australia) led the way for the Bobcats with 14 points and five rebounds, as Will Lopez (Sydney, Australia) and Jeremiah Henry (Semmes, Ala.) added 10 and eight markers, respectively. Gideon Oji (Imane in Koji, Nigeria) chipped in 13 points off the bench, connecting on 4-of-6 attempts from the floor and converting 5-of-6 tries at the free throw line.
Jon Hart paced the Bulldogs with a double-double, scoring 15 points and hauling down a game-high 11 rebounds. Gerald Boston nearly posted a triple-double, pouring in a game-high 27 points while grabbing seven boards and dishing out a contest-best seven assists. Chris Flemmings added 22 points off the bench, going 8-for-10 from the floor while knocking down 6-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc.
Barton opened the game with a 33-4 surge, capping the run on a Boston tip-in at the 7:06 mark before Charles Clarke (Orlando, Fla.) knocked down a triple with 6:29 left in the half. The Bulldogs would answer with a 22-14 run over the final six minutes of the period, taking a 55-18 advantage into the intermission following a pair of last-second freebies by Boston.
The Bobcats battled back in the second half, opening the period with 21 points in the opening nine minutes to trim the lead to 74-39 on a Lopez triple with 10:58 to play. Barton would answer with a 26-23 run over the final 10 and a half minutes, closing out the win on a late jumper by Ethan Maske.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Wednesday, February 20 when the Bobcats travel to Due West, S.C. to take on Erskine College at 5:30 p.m. in conference play.
