Bobcats Fall at Barton in Coaches vs. Cancer Contest, 96-80

WILSON, N.C. --- Senior Sean Deniton notched a team-high 19 points, but the Lees-McRae men's basketball team fell to a hot-shooting Barton squad, 96-80, in a Coaches vs. Cancer and Conference Carolinas game Friday evening at Wilson Gymnasium in Wilson, N.C.

The Bulldogs (12-7, 8-3 CC) had a quartet of players tally 11 points or more while Danny Shand led the way with 22. The Bobcats (10-8, 5-6) struggled from long range while senior Raul Tutton (Memphis, Tenn.) delivered a 16-point performance.

BC outscored LMC 51-32 in the second half while swiping 50 rebounds in the contest.

The Bulldogs sprinted out to a 13-2 lead in the first 3:22, but a Jonathan Honore (Baton Rouge, La.) layup helped shave the deficit to four, 17-13.

Deniton (Durham, N.C.) and Cameron Redd (Garner, N.C.) combined for 13 points before a Keegan Crabtree (Hillsborough, N.C.) deep three gave LMC its first lead of the night, 35-33.

Neither team could distance themselves while four made free throw from BC's Dominique Byrd capped off the scoring the first half as LMC enjoyed a 48-45 lead.

A put back bucket from sophomore Josh Gaither (Statesville, N.C.) put LMC up seven, 52-45, while the Bobcat defense didn't allow a bucket for the first 2:04 of the second half.

The Bulldogs' Khari Faison and Danny Shand combined for 10 points while BC methodically inched back into the lead.

BC's Daniel Westbrook connected on three consecutive buckets while his defense held LMC without a bucket for 3:56, increasing the lead to 10, 71-61.

Senior Jacquise Moore (Concord, N.C.) rocked the rim with a thunderous dunk at the 7:07 mark.

Moore finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

The Bulldogs' defense clamped down and held LMC to three buckets over the last 6:21 while producing a 27-5 run to finish the game.

The contest turn into a foul fest while both teams combined to shoot 81 free throws.

LMC has a quick turnaround and will travel to Mount Olive Saturday, Jan. 24 at 4 p.m. to wrap up a two-game road swing.
