WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's basketball team nearly erased a 19-point deficit on the road Tuesday at Winston-Salem State but fell just short, 83-79. LMC moves to 0-3 on the season with the loss. Lees-McRae was led by Lepreece Lynch who totaled a season-high 20 points, while Chad Hicks, Donta Falls and Jordan Turner all finished in double figures in scoring as well.
It was an up-and-down half for Lees-McRae to open the game. LMC trailed Winston-Salem State by a score of 9-2 in the early going. The Bobcats, however, surged ahead thanks to the sharp shooting of Hicks. Hicks knocked down a pair of three-pointers and LMC as a team went on a 13-0 run to open a 15-9 lead on WSSU.
LMC continued to put pressure on the Rams and led by as many as eight points (24-16) with 8:14 remaining in the half. After that, however, WSSU found another gear and scored 26 points over the final eight minutes to take a 50-32 lead into the intermission.
Lees-McRae tried its best to claw back in the second half as it got within three on two separate occasions including once with 1:15 remaining. That was as close as LMC would get, however, as it fell by a final tally of 83-79.
One of the major reasons for the comeback was LMC's work on the offensive glass as it totaled 16 offensive rebounds compared to just eight for the Rams. On the flip side, the Bobcats struggled mightily from the free throw line converting on just four of their 17 opportunities.
The Bobcats will return to the court Friday as they head to Charlotte to take on Queens University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
