GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's basketball team fell in the opening round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament Tuesday night to second-seeded Limestone, 68-56. Jonathan Honore led the Bobcats with a career-high 24 points in the game.
Not much separated the two teams in the opening 20 minutes as neither team held a lead of more than four points. Despite not scoring over the final 4:08 minutes of play in the half, the Bobcats were able to stay with the Saints as the two teams were tied at 26-26 going into halftime. Honore led the Bobcats with 11 points in the first.
When the two teams returned to the court for the second half, the Bobcats could not get their offense on track as they shot just 31 percent from the field and 10 percent from three-point range. Limestone, however, rebounded from a slow offensive half in the first to shoot near the 50-percent mark in the second. Due to the improved offense from the Saints and the cold-shooting by LMC, Limestone was able to finish off the 68-56 win.
In addition to the performance by Honore, LMC also had a few standouts in the rebounding category Tuesday. Keith Heard II finished with a team-high nine rebounds, while Chad Hicks and Marcus Anderson were not far behind with six rebounds each. Overall, seven Bobcats had at least three rebounds in the contest.
LMC finishes the 2016-17 season with an 8-21 record overall. The Bobcats will lose three seniors to graduation: Darius Malbon, Hicks and Honore. Despite the losses to graduation, LMC will return 14 players from this year's team for the 2017-18 campaign.
