DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Lees-McRae College men's basketball team closed out its holiday weekend trip to Florida with a 97-82 victory over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Saturday evening. The victory propels LMC's record to 3-4 on the 2018-19 campaign.
The first half story can be traced to balance for the Bobcats. Overall, 10 different LMC players found the bottom of the net in the opening 20 minutes of action. Malik Wright powered the Lees-McRae offense with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field in the first, while Andrew Gardner chipped in 10 points too. With Wright, Gardner and the rest of the Bobcats clicking well offensively, LMC went to the locker room with a 12-point lead, 53-41.
When the two teams returned from the break, it looked like Lees-McRae may run away with things as it extended its lead to 19 points with 17:24 to go in regulation. The Bulldogs, however, trimmed the deficit down to as little as five with about seven minutes to go. LMC put together a strong surge to keep P.R.-Mayaguez at bay thanks in part to 12 points from Quay Kimble and eight more from Kerry Richardson over the final minutes to close out the 15-point win.
Kimble ended up leading LMC with 23 points with five rebounds and five assists. Wright and Jonathan Webb weren't too far behind Kimble finishing with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Rounding out the double figure scorers for Lees-McRae were Andrew Gardner with 11 and Richardson with 10.
Lees-McRae will look to get a winning streak started when it returns to action Thursday when it hosts Johnson C. Smith at Williams Gymnasium. Tip-off for that contest is set for 7 p.m.
