BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's basketball team will open 2019 with a pair of Conference Carolinas matchups this week. First, the Bobcats will hit the road to take on Barton Wednesday before returning home to host Belmont Abbey on Saturday. Wednesday's game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off, while Saturday's contest is set for a 4 p.m. start time.
Last Time Out – The Bobcats fell on the road to Anderson (S.C.) on Sunday with a score of 93-79. The loss pushes Lees-McRae's record to 5-8 on the 2018-19 campaign.
Freshmen Flourishing – LMC was led on Sunday by the freshman tandem of Andrew Gardner and Kerry Richardson. Gardner posted a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Richardson added 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and seven rebounds.
Back in League Play – After briefly stepping out of conference action, the Bobcats will get back into their league schedule this week. Lees-McRae has won its last two conference games with victories over Southern Wesleyan (87-70) and North Greenville (81-78). Overall, LMC is 2-2 so far against Conference Carolinas foes this season.
About the Opponents – Barton and Belmont Abbey both enter this week's action with records above the .500 mark. The Bulldogs are 9-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while the Crusaders are 10-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in league action. A couple players to watch this week are Barton's Bobby Stenborg and Belmont Abbey's DeQuan Abrom. Both players currently lead their teams in scoring and were All-Conference Carolinas First Team members last season.
Series Histories vs. Opponents – The Bobcats went 5-1 combined against Barton and Belmont Abbey last season. LMC defeated the Bulldogs and Crusaders in the league tournament on their way to capturing the conference tournament title.
