BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's basketball team will be back home for the first time in two weeks Saturday when it plays host to Johnson University in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off between the Bobcats and Royals is set for 4 p.m.
Last time out – Lees-McRae rolled to a 100-66 victory at North Greenville last Saturday. The victory is the team's fourth straight and improved its record to 9-13 overall and 6-7 in Conference Carolinas play.
Steal stat – A strength of the Bobcats in 2018-19 is their ability to steal the ball from their opponents. Currently, Lees-McRae ranks 11th nationally with 193 steals this season, which also leads the conference. Quay Kimble has led these efforts with 45 steals on the season. Kimble's steal total ranks 21st nationally, while also pacing Conference Carolinas.
Leading from the line – Another strength of Lees-McRae's team has been its ability to not only get to the free throw line but also convert. Collectively, the Bobcats ranked fourth nationally in free throws made (374) and eighth in free throws attempted (503).
About the opponent – Johnson University enters Saturday's matchup in Banner Elk sporting a record of 8-13. The Royals are currently riding a two-game losing skid. Something to watch Saturday is how well the Bobcats handle Johnson's top two leading scorers in Coby Jones and Taylor Gilpin. Jones is averaging 21 points per game, and Gilpin is not far behind averaging 19 points per contest.
Series history vs. opponent – Lees-McRae and Johnson have only met one time and that matchup occurred last season. The Bobcats came out on top in that tilt winning 102-89.
