BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's basketball team dropped a 98-92 decision to Southern Wesleyan Wednesday night at Williams Gymnasium. The loss drops Lees-McRae's record to 16-8 overall and 9-7 within Conference Carolinas action.
The opening half of basketball was tightly contested between the Warriors and Bobcats. Lees-McRae used three-pointers for the bulk of its offense in the first half. Overall, the Bobcats knocked down 11 triples in the first 20 minutes of play out of their 18 field goals. Despite the stellar outside shooting from Lees-McRae, Southern Wesleyan was able to hang with the Bobcats and only trailed by three, 47-44, at the halftime break.
After trailing for nearly the entire game, Southern Wesleyan finally pulled ahead of the Bobcats with a made free throw with 6:46 to go in regulation. The Warriors shot an impressive 66.7 percent from the field in second half. With SWU's offense clicking so well, Anthony Hicks stepped up and scored 11 straight points for the Bobcats to try and keep pace. However, the Warriors kept attacking the Bobcat defense in an effort to get to the free throw line and the strategy worked as it they knocked down six straight free throws to finish off a 98-92 victory over the Bobcats.
Four Bobcats finished the night in double figures. Jason Saintizaire had his fifth 20-plus point outing of the season with a team-high 20 points. Hicks and Kamil Williams added 15 points each, while Andrew Gardner scored 14 points in 17 minutes of action.
Lees-McRae will be back in action on Saturday when they host Mount Olive at Williams Gymnasium. Tip-off for that contest is set for 4 p.m.
