Crusaders hold off late Bobcat rally in league play

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Dalton Lamb (Clemmons, N.C.) posted his second hat trick of the season to lead the Lees-McRae College men's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon, as Belmont Abbey College held off a strong second-half rally by the Bobcats en route to a 17-7 victory in Conference Carolinas play on Tate Field.

Belmont Abbey (8-4, 2-3 CC) outshot Lees-McRae (0-14, 0-5 CC) by a 56-23 margin, including a 20-15 edge in the second half, while the Crusaders converted 21-of-23 clearing attempts and scooped up 39 ground balls. The Bobcats converted 18 clears on the day, while also posting 30 grounders.

Lamb paced the Bobcats with three goals, as Jeff White (Middle Township, N.J.) tallied two goals and Schuylor Dickerson (Crozet, Va.) posted his first two assists of his collegiate career. White added game-highs of eight ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Jon Batsel (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jarrod Brady (Kernersville, N.C.) each chipped in a goal.

Ryan Harrison (Lake Mary, Fla.) made a career-high 24 saves between the pipes, as White and Dustin Barrow (Columbia, S.C.) both won five face-offs. Harrison also scooped up seven grounders for the Bobcats.

Daniel Marshall led the way for Belmont Abbey with five goals, as Connor Sellars, Joey McGinley, and Vin Loscalzo each added two strikes. Dan Morrissey, Tanner Scharr, and Ryan Corrigan posted three assists apiece, while Kevin Costa and Sean Kenny both won eight face-offs. Kenny tallied seven grounders in the contest, as Brett Lawless and Andrew Shortt recorded nine and two saves, respectively.

The Abbey tallied a quick goal before the Bobcats responded, evening the score at 1-1 on White's first of the afternoon at the 10:52 mark. Belmont Abbey answered with five goals over the next 10 and a half minutes, taking a 6-1 lead into the second quarter following Sellars' strike with 3:06 left in the first.

The Crusaders carried the momentum into the second period, tallying five goals in the quarter to push the advantage to 11-1 heading into the intermission on Sellars' second goal of the day at the 5:32 mark.

Lamb would kick start the rally with 8:53 left in the third, scoring a man-up goal off a pass by Dickerson to trim the margin to 13-2. Brady launched the Bobcats on a 5-1 run with his fourth goal of the season, closing out the third quarter at the 4:09 mark. Lamb tallied two strikes during the spurt, cutting the lead to 15-6 before White capped the run just eight seconds after Lamb's tally.

Belmont Abbey would quell the rally with two tallies down the stretch, as Marshall netted his fifth of the day with 5:29 left on the clock.

Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday when the Bobcats travel to Hartsville, S.C. to close out the regular season with a 2 p.m. league matchup against Coker College.
