BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Junior Dane Carney tallied two goals and dished out six assists and Blaine Stottlar scored four times while the Lees-McRae men's lacrosse team thwarted Notre Dame de Namur, 12-10, Saturday afternoon at Tate Field in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bobcats (1-2) picked up their first win of the season behind a 16-save effort from freshman Cameron Castle (Fort Collins, Colo.) and a clutch save from Jordan Lombardo (York, Pa.) in the second quarter. The Argonauts (0-2) saw Andrew Kofoed fire off 18 shots.
Carney (Manchester, England) registered 15 shots while sophomore Tanner Jones (Comox Valley, British Columbia) netted a hat trick.
Jones knotted the game at one with 8:28 left in the first quarter after going low on Ethan Espiritu. Goalie Castle earned the assist after scooping a groundball and sprinting the length of the field before finding Jones.
LMC pushed the lead to three, 4-1, after Carney and Alec Molander (Saanichton, British Columbia) scored goals and assisted each other. Stottlar (Clinton, N.Y.) notched two goals in the first while the Bobcats led 5-2.
Three different LMC players found the back of the net and Carney turned in three assists in the second quarter, 9-4.
Both defenses locked down in the third while NDNU scored the quarter's two goals; one on a man-up.
The Argonauts' Nicholas Wameling cut the deficit to two, 9-7, but, Jones scored 10 seconds later.
NDNU responded with a pair of goals, 10-9, with 9:32 remaining in the regulation.
Juniors Stottlar and Carney scored in a 38-second span to increase the lead to three, 12-9.
Coach Darry Thornton's defense held tough in the final 6:02 while securing the win.
Senior Dustin Barrow (Columbia, S.C.) was the catalyst of LMC's offense after winning 12-of-21 faceoffs.
Castle led the Bobcats with eight groundballs and junior Louis Parks (Mays Landing, N.J.) amassed four.
LMC travels to Winter Park, Fla. to battle Rollins Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m.
