WILSON, N.C. - Nick Robinson's shot with less than two minutes left in the second overtime lifted the nationally 11th-ranked Lees-McRae Bobcats to a 2-1 victory over the Barton College Bulldogs Saturday in a conference match.
The Bulldogs (1-7 overall, 0-3 Conference Carolinas) held their
own with the Bobcats (9-1, 3-0) throughout the match and held a 1-0
lead from the 71:51 mark until 83:40.
Bulldog freshman Paxton Barnes made it 1-0 when he took a through-ball from Kelly Cirbo, outran a few defenders and beat the charging Bobcat keeper for the goal.
The Bobcats, who posted a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal, tied it at 1-1 when senior Jay Bownes deflected a clear attempt, collected the ball and ripped a shot that beat the Bulldog keeper.
After a scoreless first overtime, sophomore Nick Robinson outran a defender down the right side and fired a shot on goal. The ball bounced off of the back of a Barton player and into the net for the game winner.
Junior keeper Sean Paradise collected five saves in goal for the Bobcats to earn the win, while Cooper, who stepped in for the injured Barton keeper, made 12 saves in the losing effort.
The physical match featured 44 fouls, four yellow cards and two red cards. Barton played the final 22 minutes with 10 players while LMC had just 10 men on the field for the final 16 minutes.
The Bobcats' next match is Wednesday, October 1st at 7 p.m. at Tusculum College in a non-conference match.
