WINGATE, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's soccer team picked up its first victory of the 2017 season Saturday afternoon as it knocked off Saint Leo by a score of 3-1. The victory improves Lees-McRae's record to 1-0-1.
Lees-McRae controlled the pace of play for the majority of Saturday's match. The Bobcats outshot Saint Leo 20-4 in the contest, including an 11-0 differential in the second half. The Bobcats also had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-1.
Overall, four different Bobcats notched points in the victory over the Lions. Tom Deeley posted a goal and an assist for his second straight multi-point performance to begin the 2017 season. Nathan Watt and Taylor Gray accounted for the other two goals, while Palle Jespersen picked up an assist on Watt's goal.
With his three points Saturday, Deeley continues to move up the career ranks in program history in both goal and assists. Deeley is now tied for eighth in both categories with 27 goals and 19 assists. Additionally, the Oxford, England native is now tied for seventh in Bobcat men's soccer history with 73 points.
Senior goalkeeper Tyler Pavlet made a pair of saves in three opportunities on his way to his first victory of the 2017 season. The victory is the 13th in Pavlet's career where he allowed one goal or less in the contest.
Next Up: The Bobcats will look to get a winning streak started Wednesday when they open their home schedule with a non-conference tilt against Carson-Newman. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Tate Field.
