HIGH POINT, N.C. - Lees-McRae College senior forward Pol Vassart was named the fall 2018 Conference Carolinas Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's soccer, the league announced today (Friday, Dec. 14).

The awards are voted on by the conference's Student Athlete Affairs Committee, and the student-athletes to receive these awards must have also been selected to the Conference Carolinas All-Academic team.

Vassart becomes the second Lees-McRae player to win the award in men's soccer program history, after Tom Deely won the award last year.

This is Vassart's first career Scholar Athlete of the Year award, which adds to the plethora of accolades he has earned this season and throughout his career. Academically, he is a two-time All-American after being named a third team Scholar All-American by United Soccer Coaches as well as a Google Cloud third team Academic All-American by CoSIDA. In addition, he was named to the Scholar All-South Region second team by United Soccer Coaches. Vassart led the conference in goals this season with 15 and points with 39, while being tied for second in the league in assists with nine. In conference play, Vassart totaled seven goals and five assists for 19 points, which was the highest total of any individual within Conference Carolinas. Vassart paced the conference in most offensive categories for most of the season. Vassart finished his career at LMC in fourth on the career goals list (38), fifth on the all-time list in match-winning goals (11) and tied for fifth in single-season match-winning goals (five). He was named the 2018 Conference Carolinas Offensive Player of the Year, and also selected to the All-Conference Carolinas First Team. In total, he is a four-time all-conference selection, as well as being selected to the All-NCCSIA First Team each of the last two seasons and also being a two-time all-region selection. He is also a two-time selection to the Conference Carolinas All-Academic Team, a two-time selection to CoSIDA's Academic All-District Team and a three-time Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll selection. The Tournon sur-Rhone, France native is the son of Valerie and Yan Vassart, and is a business administration major with a 3.63 grade point average.

"I'm delighted for Pol, he has excelled throughout his career at Lees-McRae as a student-athlete, and will depart as one of the program all-time greats," said head coach Rich Wall. "He's the epitome of what our program strives to be at the individual level. I am extremely proud to have coached him the last four years, and witnessing his progression firsthand."
