GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's soccer team was picked to finish fourth in the 2019 Conference Carolinas Preseason Coaches' Poll. The trio of Anders Stoakes, Agustin Ortiz and Johannes Oeksnevad were recognized as players to watch for the team this fall.
Limestone College was selected to win the conference championship again after collecting 99 points and nine of the 11 first-place votes. Chowan, which was second in the poll, collected the other two first-place nods to go along with 90 points. Rounding out the upper half of the poll were Belmont Abbey (78 points), Lees-McRae (63 points) and King (61 points).
The lower half of the preseason poll went as follows: Barton (55 points), Mount Olive (51 points), Emmanuel (50 points), Erskine (23 points), North Greenville (23 points) and Southern Wesleyan (12 points).
Stoakes is one of five seniors on this season's men's soccer squad. So far during his career as a Bobcat, Stoakes has totaled six assists and 19 shots in 42 career games in a Lees-McRae uniform.
Ortiz is one of two returning All-Conference Carolinas players for the team this fall. Ortiz had a breakout sophomore season where he totaled 19 points with seven goals and five assists. For his efforts, Ortiz was an All-Conference Carolinas First Team member to go along with a pair of All-Region selections from United Soccer Coaches and the D2CCA.
Oeksnevad will look to continue his stellar play from his previous two seasons in Banner Elk this fall. Oeksnevad totaled 13 points (6g, 1a) in 12 matches last season after being named the league's freshman on the year back in 2017.
The Bobcats will lift the lid on the 2019 season on September 5 when they make the short trip to take on Mars Hill.
