BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Belmont Abbey College in its regular season finale Monday evening at Tate Field. The loss moved Lees-McRae's record to 3-10-2 overall and 3-6-1 within conference play.
With potentially a better seed in the upcoming conference tournament in the balance, Belmont Abbey's intensity was matched by the Bobcats for most of Monday's contest. The Crusaders held slight advantages in shots (13-9), while the Bobcats held the edge in corner kicks (5-4). The lone score of the contest came in the first half when Lees-McRae committed a foul in the box forcing a penalty shot. Belmont Abbey's Aaron Madison took full advantage of the attempt and scored the eventual game-winner on the previously mentioned penalty shot.
Overall, seven different Bobcats attempted shots in Monday's tilt. Agustin Ortiz and Cameron Morton both logged two tries in the contest, while Eduardo Olavide, Anders Stoakes, Stephon Davis, Francisco Silvestre and Mikael Saekingstad registered the other LMC shots.
Anton Sundstrom played well in goal for Lees-McRae on Monday stopping six of seven shots he faced. Despite his effort, his record dips to 3-10-2 with the loss.
Following Monday's action, the 2019 men's soccer season is in the books. Lees-McRae qualified for the 2019 Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Tournament as the No. 8 seed. LMC will travel to top-seeded Chowan on Saturday for its quarterfinal match. The start time of Saturday's match has not yet been announced.
