CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College swimming programs continued to add to their list of impressive performances in their inaugural Conference Carolinas Swimming Championships Friday in Charlotte.
Standout swims – The top performance of a Bobcat Friday came from Arsham Mirzaei as he won the 100 yard butterfly. Mirzaei's win in the event marks the first-ever conference champion for Lees-McRae. Mirzaei nearly helped the Bobcats to another conference title in the 200 yard freestyle relay where he, Javier Sanchez, John David McCray and Bailey Lupo combined to swim a time of 1:24.51 finishing in second place behind Emmanuel (1:21.53). Additionally, Sanchez (4th – 400 yard IM) and McCray (5th – 200 yard freestyle) also picked up All-Conference honors in their individual events as well.
The duo of Jennifer Paul and Kayla Fleming led the way for Lees-McRae's women's team as both swimmers placed fourth in their events. Paul competed in the 200 yard freestyle (1:58.04) and Fleming took part in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:08.00). Additionally, both swimmers trimmed off over a second from their respective times from the prelims to the finals.
Coach's take – It was a very good day for the team," remarked Lees-McRae Head Coach Sean Weddell. "We had several more personal best and All-Conference swims. The swim of meet was Arsham's 100 fly. He becomes our first ever champion and was very close to breaking the current conference record! We should have some more good swims tomorrow to finish up a very strong conference meet."
Next up – Lees-McRae will close out its inaugural conference meet Saturday. Much like Friday, there will be two sessions with the first beginning at 10 a.m. and the second beginning at 5 p.m. The late session will be streamed and can be watched HERE.
