Swimming wraps up its first meet of the season on Saturday

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Lees-McRae College swimming programs wrapped up their first meet of the 2019-20 season Saturday in Kingsport, Tenn. For the weekend the women's team placed eighth among nine schools, while the men's team ranked third among a group of seven institutions.

"The points are really not reflective of how well the team swam in the last session," said LMC Head Coach Sean Weddell. "We have had our only individual winner of the meet in Arsham Mirzaei and the 100 Free. Additionally, both 400 freestyle relays finished second at the end of a long meet. We are in a really good place for continued improvement."

Lees-McRae had several other standout swims on the day in addition to those mentioned above. Christian Nishimura and Javier Sanchez both placed in the top three in the 400 IM. John David McCray (200 free) and Mirzaei (100 fly) both finished third in their respective events. The women's team was paced on Saturday by the duo of Molly Layde and Sophia Vanderpool. Layde paced sixth in the 200 free, and Vanderpool was fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke.

The Bobcats will return to action on Oct. 11-12 when they compete in a tri-meet against Barton and Chowan. This meet will be held in Rocky Mount, N.C. at the Harrison Family YMCA.
