Solymosi Named Freshman of the Year as Men's Tennis Claims Four Awards

Thomasville, N.C.--The Lees-McRae men's tennis team received four All-Conference Carolinas awards as Nandor Solymosi earned Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors while teammates Alek Mojski and Shaun Sumner were awarded All-Conference Second Team and All-Conference Honorable Mention respectively as announced by Conference Carolinas at the league tennis team banquet. The banquet kicked off the weekend's Conference Carolinas Championship Tennis Tournament co-hosted by Erskine College and the Sumter Palmetto Tennis Complex in Sumter, S.C.

Head coaches from conference member institutions nominate and then vote upon the award winners who represent the best of the best for Conference Carolinas in 2008. The Bobcats, who finished fourth in regular season conference play this year with a 6-3 league record, continue to improve under Head Coach Paul Goode, the reigning North Carolina State Adult Male Tennis Player of the Year.

A true freshman, Nandor Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary), finished the year 7-2 in the Conference Carolinas play at No. 1 singles with his losses coming at the hands of Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Player of the Year Phillip Pakebusch (Anderson University) and fellow All-Conference First Team player Thomas Ollivier, a junior at Limestone College. Soylmosi had a win over Division I UNC-Asheville opponent Mauricio Correa earlier in the season and heads into the conference tournament with a four match winning streak in both singles and doubles. Just prior to receiving the Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Conference awards, Solymosi was selected as the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week for week nine when he went 3-0 in singles and doubles action.

Alek Mojski (Berlin, Germany) played at the two for most of the season, tallying an 8-1 record in league play and earning him his second All-Conference award, adding All-Conference Second Team honors to his All-Conference Honorable Mention earned in 2007. Mojski's only conference loss was to All-Conference Honorable Mention foe Ceasar Grobel of Barton College. Mojski paired up with Solymosi to win the last three No.1 doubles matches of the regular season. The sophomore, as co-captain of the squad, demonstrated great leadership skills both on the court and in the classroom.

Co-captain Shaun Sumner (Burlington, N.C.) received All-Conference Honorable Mention for his efforts on the court this season. Spending most of his time at No. 3, the sophomore Sumner accumulated a 6-2 conference record in singles, then teamed up with Solymosi or freshman Travis VanHoy to earn a 6-2 record in doubles as well. He heads into tournament play with a three match winning streak in singles and a four match streak in doubles.
