Trojans hold off Bobcats in conference clash
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- Lees-McRae College freshman Taduez Poplawski (Asheville, N.C.) earned a hard-fought victory in the second singles flight on Friday afternoon, as the Mount Olive College men's tennis team held on for a hard-fought 8-1 victory over the Bobcats in Conference Carolinas action.
Mount Olive's (10-1, 6-0 CC) tandem of Edgar Bub and Rik Wolthuis kicked off the day with an 8-3 victory over Lees-McRae's (0-9, 0-5 CC) duo of Joao Araujo (Curitiba, Puerto Rico) and Carlos Pinel (Vitoria, Espírito Santo, Brazil), before Henric Falkenberg and Akio Mariano defeated Poplawski and Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.), 8-2.
Brahm Moolman and Gabriel Santana registered an 8-0 victory over Adam Chivers (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Jesse Artrip (Cleveland, Va.) in the third doubles flight, and after Bub defeated Araujo, 6-2, 7-6 in at No. 1 singles, Poplawski battled to a 7-5, 6-3 win against Santana in the second flight to give the Bobcats their first point of the day.
Falkenberg would clinch the team victory for the Trojans in the third flight, posting a 6-1, 6-0 decision against Pinel, as Mariano defeated Choi, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Moolman and Jack Frampton closed out the day with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories over Artrip and Chivers, in the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Saturday when the Bobcats travel to Wilson, N.C. to take on Barton College in league play at 1 p.m.
