ORLANDO, Fla. - The Lees-McRae College men's tennis team went 1-1 on the opening day of Spring Break tournament play, beating the University of Scranton 5-1 before falling to Wayne State 7-0 on Monday (Mar. 11).
Lees-McRae won two out of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point, before winning five out of six singles matches in order to secure the win over Scranton. Matt Meluch and James Kirkham won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Brandon Caldwell and Colton Porter earned a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Miodrag Popovic gutted out a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, before Meluch won at No. 2 singles in straight sets 6-0, 7-6. Fitzgerald Lomp continued the run in singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3, before Caldwell won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Porter closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 (10-3) win at No. 6 singles.
Wayne State won two out of three doubles matches for the doubles point, before sweeping all six singles matches. Popovic and Lomp teamed up for a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles in the match.
The Bobcats (5-5) are back on the courts tomorrow morning (Tuesday, Mar. 12) taking on Southwestern College (Kan.) at 8 a.m.
