Chapel Hill, N.C.--LMC pole vault sensation Ryan Oakes (Maysville, N.C.) capped off a brilliant freshman season at the Taylor Cattle Farm Classic track meet on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill on Friday. Oakes was the only NCAA Division II athlete in the field and jumped 4.75m (15ft-7in) to place 3rd out of 10 collegiate competitors.
The previous week, Oakes jumped 4.90m to set a school record and provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II national meet. He is currently ranked 22nd in the nation in that event and is unlikely to make the final cut to compete at nationals.
"I'm extremely proud of what Ryan has been able to accomplish on the track and in the classroom this season," said head track coach Scott Myers. "He's been a pleasure to work with and has demonstrated the proper attitude and work ethic necessary to be successful in life. It's going to be exciting to watch him grow as an athlete and individual these next 3 years."
The Lees-McRae College men's track & field team has completed it's season. The members of the team and coaching staff will spend the summer preparing for what promises to be another record-breaking year on the track.
