Watson Hired as Throws Coach for Track and Field Program

BANNER ELK, N.C. -Lees-McRae College's Head men's and women's track and field coach Ley Fletcher has announced the addition of Jeff Watson to the coaching staff as the throws coach. Watson will also be the school's compliance officer.

Watson, graduate of Anderson University, was the team's MVP in 2003. Over his career, he finished in the top ten of every meet including meets against Division I opponents. He set school records in the shot-put and discus, as well.

In high school, at Chesterfield High School in Chesterfield, S.C., Watson was a three-time region champion in the shot-put and discus. In 2002, he was the lower state runner up and in 2002 finished fourth place at the 2A State Championship Meet.

After his career ended at Anderson, Watson returned to Chesterfield as the school's throws coach for the 2007 season. As a coach, he has coached a state champion in discus, a third place finisher in the discus and a state runner-up in the shot put. He has coached over ten individual region champions and several All-Region and All-State athletes.

"Jeff is a great young man with such a bright future," Athletic Director Craig McPhail said. "I knew he was someone we needed in our department to help with NCAA compliance and also mentor our track and field student-athletes."

"His character and professionalism set him apart to me, and I felt confident he would be a role model for our young people for many years to come."
