Bobcats favored to win third straight conference crown

HIGH POINT, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College men's track & field team is the favorite to capture the program's third straight Conference Carolinas championship, announced league officials Thursday with the release of the preseason coaches' poll.

Lees-McRae won its second straight Conference Carolinas championship in 2010, taking the title by a margin of over one hundred points in the team competition. Reigning Freshman of the Year Bradley King (Hildebran, N.C.) is poised for a tremendous season, hoping to defend his title in the 400-meter hurdles while looking to improve on his third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles.

The Bobcats sit atop the poll with four first-place votes and 24 points, followed closely by Limestone College with 21 points and one first-place vote. Mount Olive College is third with 15 points and one first-place vote, followed by Queens University of Charlotte (14), Belmont Abbey College (11), and Barton College (5).

Sophomore pole vault specialist Kevin Dever (Leesburg, N.J.) and senior jumpers and sprinters Sam Youse (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Corey Alexander (Atlanta, Ga.) are also set for great seasons with the Bobcats. Incoming freshmen Eric Cloy (Ball Ground, Ga.) and Evan Webb (Salisbury, N.C.) are expected to make huge contributions for the Bobcats this season, as is a host of rookie throwers that will add great depth to the team.

"This ranking speaks highly of the great tradition of track and field and cross country that has been established throughout the years," said head coach Ley Fletcher. "It is a tribute to the work that the athletes have put in during the indoor season. We have replaced 12 seniors from last year with some very talented freshman. If this group can grow up in a hurry I believe we have a chance to win our third conference title."

Lees-McRae returns to action in its indoor season finale on Friday at the ASU Invitational, hosted by Appalachian State University, in Boone, N.C. The Bobcats open their outdoor campaign on Mar. 5 at the Power Sox Invitational, hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.
