Bobcats make late charge on day one of Conference Carolinas ChampionshipsBox score
BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Freshman Evan Webb (Salisbury, N.C.) finished first in the pole vault to lead the Lees-McRae College men's track and field team on a late charge on the first day of the Conference Carolinas Men's Track & Field Championships, hosted by Lees-McRae at the Arthur, Laurentsen and Sanders Track and Field Complex.
Mount Olive College leads the pack with 63 points, followed by Lees-McRae (40) and Limestone College (31). Queens University of Charlotte is fourth with 12 points, while Belmont Abbey College tallied eight markers on the day.
Shawn Rowand (Charmco, W.Va.) opened the day for the Bobcats with a fourth-place showing in the javelin throw, hurling his implement 41.45 meters to pick up an early four points for Lees-McRae. Richard Lane (Concord, N.C.) followed minutes later with a fifth-place performance in the high jump, posting a mark of 1.83 meters.
Freshman Devan Mackey (Hickory, N.C.) ignited the Bobcats with an impressive showing in the hammer throw, posting a personal best of 36.80 meters to place third, as Jordan Wilbur (Chesterfield, S.C.) finished fourth with a mark of 34.50 meters.
Webb and Kevin Dever (Leesburg, N.J.) picked up 18 critical points for the Bobcats in the pole vault, finishing one-two with marks of 4.34 and 3.80 meters, respectively. Craig Simpkins (Boiling Springs, S.C.) closed out the day for the Bobcats with a late surge in the 10,000-meter run, making a strong charge on the final lap to finish third with a time of 33:26.69.
Lees-McRae returns to action on the second day of the Conference Carolinas Championships on Saturday at the Arthur, Laurentsen and Sanders Track and Field Complex on the LMC campus. Competition is slated to resume at 10 a.m.
