Freshmen Steal Show on Day 2 of Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track & Field Championships

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The freshmen duo of Gabriel Blackmon and Kyandra Anderson combined for four top-five finishes and the men's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams finished second while the Lees-McRae track and field teams completed action at the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at the Arthur-Lauritsen-Sanders Track and Field Venue in Banner Elk, N.C.

Blackmon (College Park, Ga.) scorched all competitors on his way to gold in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.46 seconds. The freshman followed up with a second-place mark in the 200-meter dash after clocking a time of 21.45.

His mark in the 400 set a school and meet record while earning him a national qualifying mark.

Anderson (College Park, Ga.) continued her stellar freshman year when she claimed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.39 seconds. She earned fourth in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 25.36.

Freshman Joshua Cady (Aiken, S.C.) didn't seem rattled at his first Conference Outdoor Championship when he grabbed second in the pole vault after clearing 4.10 meters.

The quartet of Matthew Darden (Columbus, N.C.), Christian Parker (Richmond, Va.), Tyree Reed (Phenix City, Ala.) and Blackmon sprinted to a second-place finish in the men's 4x100 with a sparkling time of 41.52 seconds.

Parker stayed busy by claiming fourth in the 400-meter dash in 48.23 seconds before finishing fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.25.

Blackmon, Reed, Parker and Cody McNeely (Salisbury, N.C.) claimed second in the days' last event by posting a time of 3:17.78.

Sophomore Kayla Powell enjoyed a pair of third-place finishes in the discus and shot put. The Moyock, N.C., native chucked the discus 35.95 meters before having the shot put 11.08.

Sophomore McNeely achieved a national qualifying mark when he finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.89.

Sophomore Erin Bingham (West Jefferson, N.C.) continued her career-long success in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.53 seconds; which was good for second place.

Makayla Estep (Moravian Falls, N.C.) fared well in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.02. The sophomore grabbed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles after posting a time of 16.46.

Dual-athlete Kendall Isler (Winder, Ga.) used a leap of 13.87 meters in the triple jump to claim fourth.

Seniors Malcolm Peeler (Shelby, N.C.) and Joshua Soto (Aiken, S.C.) finished fifth and eighth, respectively in the long jump. Peeler used a distance of 7.03 meters while Soto went for 6.68.

Sophomore Joshua Godwin (Pleasant Grove, N.C.) earned fifth in the shot put after a heave of 13.16 meters.

The men's team finished fourth overall with 99.50 points while Mount Olive won the team title.

LMC's women finished fifth with 62 points while UMO grabbed the title.

Coach Ley Fletcher's squads will participate at the Appalachian State Invitational in Boone Saturday, May 2.
