Bobcats Win Greensboro Challenge

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- At the end of a long day of pool play and playoffs, the Lees-McRae men's volleyball team won the Greensboro Challenge this past Saturday.

To prepare for the regular season, Coach Petrik and a local men's AA team organized this 6-team event. Four AA men's teams from Richmond, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greenville, S.C. participated in the tournament, along with the men's club team from Virginia Tech.

After ten games of pool play, with each team playing two games to 25 points, Lees-McRae finished 7-3 and played the top seed in the semi-finals. After winning in two sets, Lees-McRae went to the finals with positive energy. They won the first game handily, but let the second one slip away. The team rallied to win game three of the finals 15-11.

In the semi-finals, sophomore Robert Ritchie led the way with 11 kills and only one error, hitting an impressive .666 in the match. Ritchie also led the team with six digs.

In the final, sophomores Colin Kelly and Chad Mercado each contributed eight kills. Mercado was errorless and stroked a .615 hitting percentage. Senior co-captain Ryan Black also had six kills and two block solos in the three-game match.

The Bobcats will take the court again Tuesday, February 3rd as they travel across the state line to Tennessee to take on King College at 7 p.m.
