GAFFNEY, S.C. --- Juniors John Sobel and Mark Shayka combined for 27 kills, but the Lees-McRae men's volleyball team came up short against Limestone, 19-25, 14-25, 25-20, 18-25, in Conference Carolinas action Friday evening at the Timken Center in Gaffney, S.C.
The Saints (4-4, 3-3 CC) reached the .500 mark on the season after Bruno Kretzschmar and Dylan Lavner went off for 13 and 12 kills, respectively. The Bobcats (0-7, 0-6) saw Sobel (Holbrook, N.Y.) turn in his fourth consecutive match of double-digit kills.
Sobel and Keenan Freitas (Hilo, Hawaii) impressed defensively with 10 digs each.
Shayka (Hamilton, Va.) notched a pair of kills in the first to spark a 4-0 run to tie the opening frame at 7.
LC used a 7-3 run to grab a 14-10 advantage thanks to an Anthony Savage ace and a pair of Bobcat service errors.
Sobel and freshman Levi Gifford (Virginia Beach, Va.) delivered a kill each to cut the deficit to one, 17-16.
Following another Sobel kill, the Saints produced a 6-1 run to close out the set, thanks to a pair of kills from Lavner.
Sobel led all players with 16 kills.
Savage tallied consecutive aces to spark a 10-4 run to open the second.
Shayka and junior Rudy Klaas (Dakar, Senegal) produced a block while LMC cut the deficit to two, 11-9.
LC proceeded to claim the set after a 14-5 run.
Freshman Hector Serviat (Miami, Fla.) notched back-to-back aces to give the Bobcats a 19-15 lead in the third before bashing out two kills to conclude the set.
LMC swung a team-best .222 clip in the set.
The Saints turned in a 10-4 run to climb out of a 7-6 hole in the fourth to claim the decisive set.
Senior Drew Blecher (York, Pa.) dished out 38 assists while Shayka amassed 11 kills.
The Bobcats have a quick turnaround as they face George Mason Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Fairfax, Va.
